FAQ

01

Why should I purchase pool chemicals from a professional pool store instead of a big box retailer?

The main reason that you should purchase chemicals from a professional pool store instead of a big box retailer is the knowledge and expertise of the pool professionals. Your swimming pool is a huge investment. You want to be sure that you are purchasing the right chemicals and treatment to prevent problems in the future.

In addition, professional pool retailers offer reputable brands that are proven in the industry to function consistently and efficiently. You can damage your liner, plaster, fiberglass, gunite pool or hot tub by using poor quality chemicals, which can cost you much more money in the long run. Not to mention the ill effects some of these can have on your skin, hair, and eyes!

The final reason to purchase from a reputable dealer is cost savings. Many big box stores offer a lower percentage of active ingredients in their chemicals so that they can ship them at a lower cost. This causes the customer to purchase more product to achieve the same result of the chemicals from a reputable dealer.

03

What do you recommend for above ground pools, steel walls or aluminum walls?

This is a very tough decision to make. Aluminum walls will last longer because they corrode at a much slower rate, however they are typically quite a bit more expensive. You need to decide what you want out of your pool, something that will stand the test of time or spend half of the price and purchase something that will last only 20 - 30 years. Most customers decide to choose steel for the price and because they would like a change the look of things after 20 years or so. The other aspect to keep in mind is that the part of the wall that comes in contact with the ground is what typically will fail on a steel pool.  This becomes an issue if you buy steel and are planning on moving the pool in the future.

05

What is the best kind of landscaping for my above ground pool?

Most plants in Northeast Ohio are already acclamated to harsh conditions and salt due to winter. The plants that you will want to avoid are plants that will grow large as the root system can grow under the pool and wreak havoc on your liner. Most customers worry about the harsh chemicals in the water that will be splashed onto the plants, but keep in mind that if you take care of your pool as your local professional suggests your pool water will stay fairly nuetral and will not harm your plants.

07

Why does chlorinated water turn my hair green?

Chlorine is often blamed for turning light-colored hair green. In actuality, chlorine is not the culprit. You need to look to the algaecide that you are using. Copper-based algaecides are what cause hair to turn green.

02

What additional equipment do I need for my pool?

Ask your pool dealer for recommendations regarding the right equipment for the pool you choose. The size and type of your pool, will determine what size pump, what type of skimmer and so on. There are also many different types of pool cleaners, accessories and chemicals to choose from to make the most of your pool experience. Don’t be afraid to do your own research, but if you’ve found a dealer you can trust, have confidence that they will make the right recommendations for you and your pool.

04

How long do I have to wait to use my swimming pool after chemical treatment?

Generally it is safe to use your pool after chemicals have circulated throughout the pool, usually 15 minutes to one hour. If shocking or super-chlorinating your pool, wait until the chlorine levels drop to recommended levels which is typically 24 hours. If using a non-chlorine shock you can swim right away.

06

How often do I need to test my pool water?

Weekly testing works for most backyard pools, but the best bet is to test your pH and chlorine levels at least twice per week. Chlorine should be fed continuously through a chemical feeding device to maintain a consistent level. When dealing with such a large body of water you have to give your filter system time to mix the chemicals before you test. If you over-test you will constantly be adjusting your chemicals.

08

Do I need a permit for an above ground pool?

All cities and municipalities are different.  If this is a concern for you, check with your local planning and zoning department.

10

What does it mean if I smell a strong chlorine odor in my pool or hot tub or it burns my eyes?

A common misconception, even among some inexperienced "technicians," is that the strong odor of chlorine means there is too much chlorine in the water. This is absolutely incorrect and in fact, the opposite is true. Chlorine works by attacking bacteria and other contaminates in the water. It combines with these particles and begins to smell strongly. The only method of getting rid of the combined chlorine is to shock your pool regularly with the correct amount of shock for your sized pool.

09

Do I need to have my above ground pool installed by a professional?

Pool installation is not for everyone. If you are a handy person it is achievable. As with most professions, it is easier when you know what your doing. Knowing the little tricks to the trade can save a homeowner hours of frustration. Most above ground pools are designed to be assembled with as little effort as possible, but it may be worth hiring a professional to save yourself the headache and to assure that the job is done right from the start. If you decide to hire a professional remember that they book up quickly at the beginning and end of each season, so plan accordingly.
